Build Solar Panel at Home

We’ve had so many questions about how to build solar panel for residential homes, that we built this site so our friends could  come here to find answers to their questions about solar energy.

Secret to Building Solar Panels
You’ll find that we’ve managed to condense the entire building process down to six easy steps.

Build Your Own Solar Panel

Protecting the environment and saving money and energy are all great benefits for those who want to build a solar panel for home residential use.  Your efforts to learn how to make your own power source today will yield benefits for many years to come.  It’s not only possible to make your own energy generator, it’s also a method that is actually quite simple.  Renewables are easy to make, but it’s important to have the correct information that leads you by the hand every step of the way.

Constructing your own alternative energy system can be summarized into six easy steps.  This is how I did it.

Homemade Solar Power in Six Simple Steps

(1)  The primary material you’ll need to locate is a 12 volt (or higher) solar panel.  The size is your choice and simply depends on how much electricity you want to produce from your personal project.  There are many resources you can use to find these panels including a local RV store, eBay, or a marina in your area.  But it’s important to know exactly what to look for.  In fact, as we get into the actual construction of the solar panel and it’s related components, you might want to look at this valuable resource.  It’s my secret weapon that answered all my questions when I first started.

(2)  The next step is to locate a battery.  Unlike your standard car battery, you’ll want a deep cell, rechargeable battery.  Bigger is not necessarily better, so look for a smaller 12 volt you can recharge for continuous use.  Lead or acid battery should work fine.

(3)  When working on our homemade power system, safety should be foremost in our minds.  That’s why I suggest you find a battery box to house your 12 volt battery.  This should provide adequate protection from the power generated from the battery.  It’s especially important for families with young children who need to be protected.

(4)  Since I wanted to build solar panel that would run our home AC appliances (a TV for example), I also needed to purchase an inverter.  And a DC meter will be on your materials list as well.  These items are necessary to convert your power from the DC panel into a useable AC form of energy that can actually run typical household electrical items.

(5)  We’re almost done now.  Next, we want to assemble the various parts.  Start by attaching the meter and DC input to the battery box top by using a handheld drill.  Then you’ll want to connect the battery and the meter with insulated wire.  Be sure to attach the first wire to the negative input.  Finally, the solar panel and the DC inlet are connected to your rechargeable battery.

(6)  Now comes the fun part.  After you’ve closed the lid and created a tight seal around it, you’re ready to position your new solar power generator so that it collects the sunlight to begin charging the battery.  Wait 8-10 hours to allow enough time for a full charge to your system.

The first time I built my own solar panels, I struggled with some of the little details that I didn’t fully understand.  You can easily overcome this problem by following along with a simple, easy to build system that explains every step you need to quickly get your solar panels up and running.

More Background on Solar Panels to Power a House

If you are thinking of changing over to solar power to live off grid, then it’s necessary to either purchase or build solar panel. Of course we don’t care for the first idea because of the cost or expense. It’s much smarter to go for the second option. When planning to build your own solar panels, it’s important to know about the interior mechanism of the panels even if you’re using a product that includes video in their DIY kits.

The main  building design component is photovoltaic cells.  You’ll find that even broken solar cells can do.  They are interconnected in a large series. That is the primary layout of a modern day solar panel. Most of today’s photovoltaic cells are made from crystalline silicon which is wafer thin. These are layered on cadmium telluride which is linked together in a series. This forms a Photovoltaic group.

The entire setup is the essence of the solar panel which makes it very delicate. This is the reason why one has to carefully package them.  The packaging is performed by sandwiching the device between a back and front layer arrangement. The back layer is usually made of metal, plastic, or fiberglass.

As you continue the building process,  additional materials you might need include silicone caulk, solder, copper and a few pieces of plexi glass.

And the front section uses a clear sheet or layer of acrylic plexiglass. This way there is little danger to the internal device of the solar panel which need to be protected from environmental elements.  For those who simply want to educate themselves, you can dig deep into educational science terminology such as electrons, diode, oxide, watts, amps and more.  One practical aspect of all this is to learn about the electric output you’ll be generating.  For example, your hot water can be produced from your home solar power plant that you’ve created.
